Darmstadt is conveniently located 35km south of Frankfurt Central Station. Subway line S3 usually runs every half an hour, complemented by several daily local trains and occasional express trains (IC/EC+ICE, require special fare though). From both terminals of Frankfurt Airport the Airliner Shuttle Bus connects directly to Darmstadt central station every half an hour. (Its ticket is also valid for bus and tram connections within Darmstadt city.)
Darmstadt is the starting point of the famous Bergstrasse, a scenic ancient transport road past a series of mountains with castles on top, passing through Weinheim and Heidelberg. Places for sightseeing in Darmstadt include the Artists' Colony and a building designed by architect Hundertwasser.
On Wednesday afternoon we will enjoy a guided tour of Grube Messel, UNESCO world heritage site due to its vast collection of fossiles, followed by a vegetarian dinner served in TU Darmstadt's Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus.
